Hot Days are Coming

Its starting to get hot again and we are working overtime to keep the animals cool. Its always a challenge to find new ways to keep them hydrated and cooled down. For some of the animals just a nice bit of shade or an ice bottle will do. For others they like the ones that involve treats or some kind of enrichment. Sitka for instance likes to play with whatever we give him. So, today I gave him an ice cube with apples frozen in it. He spent quite a long time getting to the apples while he cooled down from the ice. Its important to keep the animals at a comfortable temperature but its also a lot of fun to watch them try out our methods to maintain those temperatures.

Sitka’s Snow Day

Today Sitka the Arctic Fox got a treasure box full of snow and ice. We hid some fun treats inside and watched him happily dig!

TV Appearance

Today, Sleepy, Spice and Sitka made a TV appearance on San Diego Living. It was an exciting event because it was Sitka’s first time back in the spotlight. He was a little nervous but he did really well considering it was his first day back on the job. All the animals looked cute as ever while trying to promote Zoofari and reminding people that an animal adoption is a great gift to give someone this holiday season.

Furred Up and Ready to Go!

Colder weather is on its way and though that doesn’t mean much in San Diego; it does mean the animals are preparing for the upcoming winter. In order to do so, some of our animals have to take more extreme measures. Take Sitka for example, a few months ago we had an Arctic Fox who didn’t look like he could handle hail let alone snow. He only had his summer coat then but in just a short period of time he now is covered in a winter coat. Though it is not required for winter here, it certainly makes him a true Arctic and of course adorable.

The coat also helps us with his training. He has improved immensly over the past 7 months and his coat now helps us keep his lease in place. He has been a tricky one in the past but with a lot of time and hard work he has come along way. He really loves his walks and we are glad we have gotten him to the point of letting us take him.

Snow Day

Today we decided to take some extra ice we had and give our fox, Sitka an Arctic experience. We dumped an entire bag of ice into his enclosure and he started to investigate right away.

At first he just stepped on it and then ran off. Next, he decided to dig through it and finally he attempted to eat it. He was having a great time playing around in the ice and we had a fun time watching.

Though ice/snow should be nothing new to him, this fox has enjoyed the San Diego weather and isn’t quite used to it. He seemed to enjoy the ice a lot and it is a great behavioral enrichment experience for him.

Lazy Days

As summer continues on the animals are restless and in search of shade. While I walked around today I noticed just how restless the animals were and snapped some cute pictures in the meantime.

Baloo, a Binturong, laying in his hammock.

Murphy and Roland our two Groundhogs trying to stay cool on the ground.

Tator Tot, a Porcupine, cuddling up to an ice bottle.

Here’s a short random video of Sitka being silly. He’s trying to find all of the left over crumbs from his treats.

Summer Birthdays!

Here at the facility a few of our animals are celebrating their first birthday.

Last summer we were luckily enough to get some new arrivals; a Serval, an Arctic Fox and a Gray Fox. Siri, Sitka and Meadow have made Zoofari/Wild Wonders even better with their fresh faces and vivacious personalities. Since they first arrived they stole our hearts with their timid nature and little paws.

Now, they have fully moved into their new home and have gotten used to having us around. Each day they surprise us with how remarkable they are and we look forward to celebrating with them many birthdays to come.

Here are some reminders of how different they looked when they first arrived.

Fox Leisure Time

It’s a quiet day at the facility as most of the animals are restless. I decided to see what some of our furry friends were up to and this is what I found….

Meadow the Grey Fox playing through the fence

Sitka the Arctic Fox perfecting the art of sleeping
