Big Events Planned For 2011

Happy New Year!

2011 is upon us and we have some very special events and news that we’d like to share with all of you.

Each first Saturday of every month, we’d like to invite all those who’d like to attend our “Speaker’s Series” here at Wild Wonders.  Each series has a specific theme and animals that are related to a particular topic.  Here is a preview of what will be covered during our first two approaching series:

Our first Speaker’s Series is on January 8 and will concentrate on “Winter Wonders.”  Sitka, our arctic fox, and Roland, our groundhog, will be just some of the animals making a special appearance to discuss some of their special winter adaptations and survival strategies.

In honor of Valentines Day, on February 5, “Love Is In the Air” will be the focus of our second Speaker’s Series.  This series will center around successful mating strategies and courtship behaviors of some of our animals.  How do alligators and porcupines attract a mate?  This and much more will be discussed during this very tender Speaker’s Series.  Chocolates will be available for purchase.

On March 2-4, the Frank Buck Zoo will be hosting the inaugural Association of Professional Wildlife Educators (APWE) Conference.  This conference is open to anyone who is interested in attending.  The fee is $99.  The application is available for download on the APWE website.  The deadline to apply is January 30. The conference will be exploring various topics such as:  Conservation in action and Social networking for your wildlife education business.  John Scott Foster of the Wellsley Foundation will be the keynote speaker.   Sid Price, President of the The International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (IAATE) will also be attending and speaking on how to successfully produce a free flight traveling avian show.  During the conference, several field trip opportunities will be available to the Dallas Zoo, Sharkarosa Ranch, and several behind the scenes areas at the Frank Buck Zoo.

Earth Day, Friday April 22, promises to be a day filled with fun and excitement as we host our annual Safari Scramble.  This event will be held at the Vineyard Golf Course in Escondido.  Several of our wonderful animal ambassadors will be making an appearance including our much beloved four-year-old cheetah, Victor.

We are extremely excited to share just some of our upcoming events for 2011.  What’s more, Wild Wonders is also very honored and proud to announce that we will become the American liaison for Cheetah Outreach located in South Africa.  We will be handling all U.S. donations and hope to be hosting events later this year.

Volunteer Open House

logo

Today we had an Open House for our volunteers and their friends and family.  We have a group of over 30 volunteers that help us out every week, and without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

This afternoon, they each gave their friends and family a personal tour of the compound, showing them what they do, and who they help care for on a weekly basis.

We at Wild Wonders would like to just say another big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that help us stay up and running.  We couldn’t do it without you all!!!

Our volunteers and their guests enjoy snacks and get to know volunteers from different days.

Volunteers’ guests got to watch Tino play with the donated Christmas Tree.

If you’ve got a passion for working with animals and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, send us an email and let us know you’re interested in volunteering.  Don’t have the time?  For other ways to help out, check out our Wish List on our website (http://www.wildwonders.org/how-you-can-help/wish-list) or our shop at www.zoofari.net/shop.

Thank you again everyone!!

Meet Holly Jolly!!

logo

We came up with a name for our newest armadillo baby:  Holly Jolly!  We wanted an “R” name to go with our other hairy screaming armadillo, Roly Poly, but we went with a more festive name, seeing as she came to us during the holidays.  So Holly Jolly it is!!  Be sure to schedule a tour to see her soon!!
