Surviving the Storm

Last week was quite an adventure with fast winds and a lot of rain. We are glad to have a day of blue skies and sun once again. Though it may not last, it is definitely needed for our sakes and the animals. They are enjoying a nice break from winter weather and soaking up the sun. The foxes have finally come out of their houses and are laying in the sun. The birds however are the most thankful for a warmer day. They get brought in at night when it gets too cold out and they are not too fond of their inside sleeping arrangements. As soon as they get outside in the morning, they vocally make sure the staff know that they prefer their normal enclosures. Everyone seems to appreciate the southern California weather, even Sitka the Arctic Fox was running for cover when the rain started up.

IT’S RAINING CATS & DOGS!!!

Or should I say, it’s raining ON cats & dogs! And, Binturongs, Porcupines, Kinkajous, Monkeys, Foxes, Servals, Parrots….
The animals, staff and volunteers at Wild Wonders are getting more than they bargained for this week with the El Nino weather rolling in. Armed with boots, raincoats, and dry blankets, we all wrestle with the elements to keep all the animals warm, dry, & fed. It is quite a challenge this week.  It looks like this is just the beginning….

Infested With Roaches

Its the good kind. Though, I’m not sure that everyone feels that way.

I’m taking about our Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches!

They may seem like a weird animal to have at the facility but they can be a really big crowd pleaser. When we go to shows we often pick kids out of the audience to get up close and personal with these little guys. I can understand why most adults would not appreciate a cockroach crawling on them but kids love them.

They are obviously from Madagascar but the interesting thing about them is that they make a hissing sound. They are able to make this hissing noise by pushing gas through the breathing pores that are located on their abdomen. Not only can they make a hissing sound but they have two different sounds that they can make. One is a disturbance hiss and the other is made by males and is a fighting hiss. Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are wingless and are not aggressive so, they make our job pretty easy when it comes to taking care of them.

Lunch Break!!!

Hi! My name is Kaya the kinkajou. I decided that I wanted to go out for lunch today, so my keepers took me out for a little quality time. I got to explore, make new friends, and most importantly found a new snack!

I ordered bananas & monkey chow last time...let's try something new!

Babysitting

Here at Wild Wonders we sometimes have guests come to stay with us. This week we have a Bengal Tiger cub named Nayla. She’s only 3 months old and already weighs about 25 lbs! Today some of the staff and volunteers had a great time playing with her.

Victor in Training to RUN!

ZOOFARI 28.2

You wouldn’t think it takes any training for a Cheetah to run, would you? Well, training is just what it takes. Since Victor was born in S. Africa to be a Conservation Ambassador, running & chasing at top speed had to be taught by his surrogate Mom’s. Recently we have been training Victor to recognize an inanimate object as a prey item. No easy feet for a wild cat designed to chase live prey. After the chasing is ingrained, then the stopping part comes in. Luckily, Victor is enamored by Linda, his primary trainer and will just about follow her anywhere. Stay tuned for updates & photos of his training & the announcement of his “Big Day,” where he will hopefully run at a top speed of 70mph to catch his “prize!”

Our Little Pea

Penelopea, the baby Porcupine, may be getting older but she is still acting like a youngster. We take her down to explore Tator’s enclosure while he is gone but she still isn’t 100% sure of herself yet. At first she slowly comes out of the crate and then she usually hangs out by me for a little while.

Then she finally decides to start cruising around and climbing things yet she always checks in with me after a short time on her own. She is very cute when she decides to climb to the top shelf and often she forgets the difficultly in getting down. Though a crate is always there to save her, she is starting to fend for herself.

She has a lot of fun in the larger enclosure but she still loves to be in the office where she sees people all day long. She is quite the attention hog but we don’t mind because she is cute as ever.
