The Long Awaited Update

So much has happened in the last few weeks since my last update, that I just don’t know where to start. Life has been a little hectic around the wildlife center lately, from making sure everyone is prepared for the March Fundraiser to keeping our animals healthy. We have had a lot of sickness come through the center and sadly not all the animals have made it through. Recently we have had to say farewell to one of our beloved Chinchillas, Sugar Mama. Sadly she isn’t the only animal to leave us this year, Gordo, the Horned Frog, and well as Dusty the bunny all moved on to a better place. They will all be missed.

But don’t worry we do have some good and very exciting news.

Yesterday at 7pm, Jackie Navarro made a special appearance on the Channel 10 news, click here to watch the video online. Channel 10 also wrote up a beautiful article all about their day at Zoofari. It is great to get such strong support from the local community.

In cheetah news, Victor had been practicing all week for a photo shoot that took place last Wednesday. For the photo shoot they wanted Victor to lay down on the table and stay still. As simple as this sounds for a cheetah it can take a lot of work to get this down right. So for the weeks leading up to the event Kim and Linda spend each day laying down on a table inviting him to join them. You can just imagine how funny this looked but thanks to their hard work and dedicating, Victor was fantastic at his photo shoot, he got up on the table and was such a good boy. If you don’t believe me you can watch all the excitement of that day on Ashton Kutcher’s qik page, that’s right Ashton was there. He just so happened to be in the building for a meeting when Victor showed up. Ashton was definitely excited about the opportunity to come face to face with a cheetah.

Always Having Fun

Nothing is better than after a long morning of cleaning than spending a little time with Siri, the Serval. This kitten is a handful and can be easily distracted, especially when it involves a toy.

Servals, like Siri,  are medium sized wild cats from Africa, they are slender with long legs to help them reach deep into rodent holes. Servals have the longest legs relative to body size of all cats. Watch as Siri stretches her long legs out in front of her to catch her toy. Servals also have large ears that they use to listen for rodents moving underground, if you watch closely you can see her ears move towards the noise. These are just two of the features of the Serval that allow them to be great hunters, getting nearly 50 % of all their attempts.

As fun as she is to watch, we must remember that theses cats as well as may others are disappearing in the wild. Help to keep this beautiful creatures with us. Visit Zoofari.net to see how you can help.
