Trip to Mammoth Lakes

This weekend Wild Wonders and their crew took a drive up the mountains to the beautiful Mammoth Lakes area. The event called “Famarama”, included all sorts of family events along with our Wild Wonders who put on a handful of mini presentations, that went great.

Since the event was throughout the weekend. The animals and trainers stayed in a gorgeous cabin overnight. Well since the trip up was through the “Mojave Desert” which was near 110 degrees, the cool  47 degree night temps was too cold for sleepy our little oppossum. Check him out in the pic reading “how to start a fire” to warm himself up.

Over all the trip was a great success and very entertaining for the animals and trainers as well as the families in Mammoth Lakes. We hope to have a similar event next years and if you are in the area, please come check us out.

What a Trip!!

This weekend Kimberly, the Wild Wonders Supervisor, and I (the other Kim) made a quick trip up to Northern California to take part in a great street fair in Redwood City. Redwood city was gorgeous and full of some very interested animal lovers. While the event was fantastic, the real fun came with the adventures on the road.

First off was the wonderful task of attempting to move around in the back of a moving cargo van on the freeway. Sometimes the animals were in need of a quick change or a frozen water bottle to help them beat the heat. Instead of taking a break we often both agreed that we would be better off staying on the road and simply climbing into the back. There is nothing better than waiting for rush hour traffic in LA and making a dart to the back.

My first experience with this was when Cezar, our gorgeous green Iguana, decided that his enclosure was too dirty to be in. So when we hit a slow spot I made a break for the back and there I was with Cezar in hand. It seemed easier at the time to bring him back to the front until we stopped for some gas.

Well little did I know that he would use my leg as a tree branch. Isn’t he just adorable. He knew exactly were the sun was and he made a break for it. He even at one point decided to taste my toe rings. I love this little boy.

Kim had some great adventures too, including touring a hotel bathroom with Kima the kinkajou. Kinkajous are extremely curious and acrobatic. The combination of the two makes for some very funny experiences. Including when Kima tried to jump from the fridge to a coat hook, she ended up missing but caught herself by wrapping her tail around a water bottle and holding on the cabinet with her back toes. It was truly amazing.

Just like a little kid this little slip up didn’t prevent her from explore some more. In fact in made her more determined to climb the highest point in the hotel room, the shower rail. By jumping off of Kim and the towel rack Kima was able to get herself on top. She was very proud of herself and proceeded to strut along the tight rope that was the shower rail. She can be so adorable.

Kim was also able to get some great video of her curiosity, including her inspection of the hotel’s faucet. Also look out for the towels, they are everywhere, as the towel rack was being used as a balance beam and a jumping off point to get to the shower rack.

As the days wound down for us Kims, the day was just starting for all the animKim and Latte, the Hedgehog by you.als. Most of the animals we brought are nocturnal, meaning they are awake at night. So often we woke up in the night to sounds of digging. Especially from little latte, the African pygmy hedgehog. Latte loves to dig through his paper bed and make a little hole for himself to sleep in. He can be so cute but not so much at 4am. Here is a great pic of him and me before bed time. He loves wax worms and was basically crawling out of his box to get to them.

Overall this was a great trip, including eye opening experiences and adventures. I hope we are able to book a similar trip next year.
