Hi, I’m Martha! I just finished my internship at Wild Wonders. This internship has been a very interesting experience for me. I started as a volunteer in August of 2010 and after a year I signed up for an internship. It has not been all fun and games, there was always work to do; cleaning enclosures, preparing specialized meals, getting animals and transport crates ready for shows, supervising volunteers, cleaning enclosures, completing various projects around the compound, taking care of animals in response to weather, and did I mention cleaning? It may sound like a lot of work, but there have been fun moments too. I have handled sugar gliders, chinchillas, armadillos, porcupines, opossums, boa constrictors, pythons, iguanas, alligators. I have even been inside enclosures to socialize with owl monkeys, binturongs, wallabies, Fennec foxes, Servals, and a Cheetah (with a staff member of course).
I also accompanied staff to shows and learned a lot about presentation of animals. Kids are wonderfully curious about animals, often reaching out to them, not being aware of the danger this can pose themselves. One example of this was when I went to a show and we had to restrain our Sulcata Tortoise, ‘Big T’, from getting too close to kids. We also had to tell a few kids not to reach for his face (where his strong jaws are). It took the two of us to restrain him from walking towards the audience. He was a real workout, and by the end I was sweating. Although we were in control the whole time, it took all our effort to manage the animal, the people, and the show. Because of that experience, I will always keep one eye on the animals, and one on the kids.
Internships are a great opportunity to learn how things are really done in real locations. The hard work pays off in the countless unique experiences you can have while there. I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in animals to look for internships at locations that look out for our animal friends and educate people about them (such as Wild Wonders). It was an amazing experience for me, and it can be for you too.
My thanks to everyone at Wild Wonders. You are a great bunch of people, and you do good work. Thanks for letting me do my part for the animals.
We are counting down the days until Christmas with our 12 critters of Christmas! Each wonderful Critter can be sponsored by adopting them at Zoofari’s gift shop. Each adoption is 100% tax deductible.
Today Olivia the Owl Monkey is in the spotlight on day 5:
Olivia is an Owl Monkey, the only nocturnal monkey in the world. She was confiscated in a cruelty raid at a hoarder’s residence in New York and Zoofari was asked if we could provide her with a permanent home. During the raid Olivia was found in a small bird cage with stale donuts and fecal matter. When she came to Wild Wonders she was frightened and horribly malnurished. Today, Olivia is a busy, healthy, and affectionate Owl Monkey that loves to ride around on staff members’ shoulders eating bananas. She lives in a large enclosure in her forever home with Lou, another Owl Monkey that came to Wild Wonders from a lab in Florida.
Unfortunately many Owl Monkeys find their way into the United States because they have been obtained for research uses in labs engaged in Malaria research as they are resistant to the parasites that cause the disease.
These little guys are awake all night and need lots of toys or stimulation during the hours we are asleep. Your adoption fees will help us buy the toys and training tools necessary to keep these little creatures busy and healthy. Olivia did a photo shoot this year for a well know new York photographer and her and Lou are a true couple. She has learned to love him the past year!
